Arizona Medical Student Loan Program

The State of Arizona created the Board of Medical Student Loans in 1978 through the Arizona Medical Student Loan Program to provide loans to Arizona medical students in return for their service as primary care or other specialty physicians in the rural and other underserved regions of the state of Arizona. The Board of Medical Student Loans operates solely to serve the Legislature as mandated in A.R.S. § 15-1721 through 15-1725.

The Board of Medical Student Loans meets publicly pursuant to A.R.S. § 38-431.02.

The Board of Medical Student Loans will meet on Monday, April 15, 2024 at 5:30pm MST via videoconference.

The Board consists of nine members:

two members who are appointed by the Governor and who are knowledgeable in the problems of health care in Arizona;

  • Brandon Abbott, D.O.
  • Jasleen Chhatwal, M.D.

 

the director of the Department of Health Services or the director's designee;

  • Julia Wacloff, MSPH, RDH

 

and one representative from each accredited medical school in this State who is appointed by the president or chief officer of that medical school;

  • Irene Alexandraki, MD, PhD, MPH, University of Arizona, College of Medicine Phoenix
  • Carlos Gonzales, MD, University of Arizona, College of Medicine Tucson
  • Jewel Kling, MD, Mayo Clinic, Alix School of Medicine
  • Katherine Mitzel DO, Midwestern University, Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Sharon J. Obadia, DO, A.T. Still University, School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona 
  • Rachel Jones, MAEd, Creighton University, School of Medicine

 

The University of Arizona College of Medicine Tucson Financial Aid Office is the current administrative office to the Board of Medical Student Loans.  Sherri McClellan, Program Coordinator with the University of Arizona, provides administrative assistance to the Board and its chairperson, acts as the contact for correspondence, requests and general inquiries, and organizes the Board meetings.
